Understanding the Bible

When studying the Word of God it is imperative that you start out with prayer. Prayer is the connection that we use to God to talk to him. It is only through prayer and His divine revelation that we learn new insights when studying the bible. The bible is not just some book that you occasionally pick up and read (although many Christians treat it this way). It is as Psalm 119:105 states "..A lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." The bible is our direction in life, and it is one of the biggest ways that God communicates to us. So how do we know what God is trying to say to us or how do we effectively study the Word of God?

1. Start with prayer - This allows not only God to know that we are spending time with Him but it also puts us in a state of mind to be open to God

2. Don't just read to read - Read the Bible to gain insight on what God is trying to tell you.

3. Look deeper - Don't just look at the words that are written, you have to look at the context in which it was written as well, and allow God to speak to you through His word

4. Reread if necessary - If you do not understand or are still having trouble repeat the steps again. Remember you are spending time with God, you best friend, the one who saved you from a life of torment. If you do not get what the verse is saying in one translation go to another translation. There are a variety of great translations out there from Word to Word translation such as KJV, NKJV, and ESV, to a thought for thought such as NLT and NIV.

5. Pray and give thanks - This is important always thank God and be genuine about it
